Elon Musk, the controversial billionaire entrepreneur known as the CEO of SpaceX, Tesla, and owner of X, is the world’s richest man with an estimated fortune of over $450 billion. He is set to enter the U.S. government following his unwavering support for Donald Trump during his 2024 campaign. He has been appointed to lead the new Department of Government Efficiency by President Trump.
But why him?
This question can be easily answered, notably due to his financial support of $200 million to Trump’s campaign and his media influence through his X platform. However, the most important point is his expertise in business management. Above all, Elon Musk is a successful entrepreneur who will apply all his skills to make the government more efficient, according to his statements.
Elon Musk has already presented several measures targeting American civil servants. Indeed, he wants to initiate a large wave of layoffs and end remote work. This latter measure is becoming the norm for companies that, 4 years after Covid-19, are demanding a 100% return to the office in 2025, like Amazon.
One of the flagship measures of his project is the digital transformation of the administration. Indeed, with the wave of layoffs he wants to provoke, his ultimate goal is to replace personnel with technology to reduce bureaucracy and automate certain government services.
An entrepreneur’s vision of bureaucracy
This vision he possesses is that of an entrepreneur, aiming to apply the efficiency and turnover rules of the private sector to the American public sector. With these methods, Musk wants to recover $2 trillion from the federal budget, adding that bureaucracy was an existential threat.
Moreover, Elon Musk is a strong advocate for deregulation in favor of businesses, particularly in the technology sectors. His new position in the government could push Donald Trump to listen to his advice for tech companies, including subsidies for companies like SpaceX or OpenAI, which are flagships of the American economy and undoubtedly represent the future of the United States.
Consequently, the next 4 years are likely to be very tough for American civil servants who will have to endure the same pressure as Twitter employees, nearly 50% of whom were shown the door. The growth of digital technology in the administration was inevitable, but Elon Musk’s arrival will take it to a new dimension.
