The AI PIN is an anti-smartphone that helps people stop looking at their phones and encourages them to pay attention to their surroundings instead.
The Humane AI PIN.
The founders of the « Humane AI PIN, » Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, established their stealthy artificial intelligence company in 2019. Recently, they introduced their pioneering first product, an AI Pin, on November 9th. The company, based in San Francisco, has announced that the AI Pin will be accessible to the public in early 2024.
The company has formed partnerships with Microsoft, open AI and T-Mobile to usher in the upcoming era of individual mobile computing leveraging its close relationship with Microsoft and open AI.
Inside the AI Pin: Features and Functions
The device is designed to be worn as a pin on the user’s jumper, jacket, or coat.
The device is composed of two components: a computer and a battery booster. The battery supplies power to a small battery within the main computer. User engagement occurs through voice, touch, gesture or the laser ink display. The device is capable of projecting text and images onto the user’s palm.
The AI pin contains an “ultra-wide RGB camera”, depth sensor and motion sensors that identify objects and captures video memories.
Bethany said: It has an indicator that we call “trust lights”.
The trust light indicates when its input optical or audio sensors are active, ensuring full transparency and data security. The AI pin comes with a “beacon” that lets the user know when it has something, such as messages from trusted contacts.
It can also be used to ask questions and make phone calls. The pin establishes connections with AI models and integrates closely with Chat GPT, serving as one of the device’s core features.
The user can take a photo with a double tap or record a video. The Ai pin remember everything the user input into notes and can recall what is relevant.
The device communicates to the user through a “personic speaker” or Bluetooth headphones and it does not need to be paired to a smartphone. This function allows only the user to hear what the device is saying.
When communicating with the pin, the user can make use of the “Catch Me Up”. This function involves the device sorting through the user’s emails and messages, providing them with information about the individuals trying to get in touch.
To manage and access all user data, including photos, videos and notes, Humane provides a central hub referred to as the “Humane Center”. This platform is designed to simplify user’s interactions with the AI pin, ensuring ease from setup to daily usage.
When a user purchases the AI Pin, they are guided through the onboarding process through a privacy-protected portal hosted by Humane. By providing information to the AI pin during onboarding, the user ensures that when they unbox their personal AI, the device is already familiar with them and their preferences.
The AI Pin price.
The AI pin was exhibited at Ted earlier this year and whilst this new model is more advanced, Humane affirms its commitment to ongoing enhancements, ensuring that the AI Pin will evolve through future software updates.
The AI pin is not cheap at 700$ alongside a 24$ a month subscription giving the user a T-Mobile phone number and internet coverage.
In contrast, Meta has recently launched the more affordable “Ray-ban Meta Smart glasses” at 299$ posing a challenge for the AI Pin in the market.
Some argue that the smartphone maintains its superiority, posing a challenge for Humane as the first mover in encouraging people to transition away from their smartphone.
