You are currently viewing Seoul exposes toxic chemicals in Shein products: A call for stricter quality controls

In May 2024, the Seoul government revealed alarming findings regarding the safety of children’s products sold by Shein, an online shopping giant headquartered in Singapore. According to inspections, several items, including children’s shoes, leather bags, and belts, contained dangerously high levels of toxic chemicals, specifically phthalates. Phthalates, used to soften plastics, were found in amounts far exceeding legal limits, with one pair of shoes containing 428 times the permitted level and three bags showing 153 times the limit.

Health risks associated

Phthalates have long been associated with severe health risks, including hormone disruption, obesity, heart disease, cancers, and fertility issues. These chemicals are commonly found in everyday products, such as containers, beauty items, and toys.

Since the beginning of their inspections in April, Seoul authorities have scrutinized 93 products, discovering that almost half contained hazardous substances. This investigation included items like children’s watches and coloring pencils. In response, the city government has requested the removal of these products from sale, and most platforms have complied with this directive.

Shein’s response to safety concerns

Shein responded by asserting its commitment to product safety, stating that it requires suppliers to adhere to strict controls and standards and uses international third-party testing agencies to ensure compliance. The company emphasized that it takes immediate action to remove products from its site and conducts investigations if any claims are made against its products.

These findings have intensified scrutiny of Shein’s business practices, particularly in the European Union and South Korea, where there are efforts to enforce stricter safety regulations on digital firms to protect consumers, especially minors.

Impact of E-Commerce operations on product quality

The operational and managerial practices of e-commerce companies significantly influence product quality. In the case of Shein, the rapid expansion and high turnover of trendy items likely contribute to lapses in quality control. The drive to offer low-cost products swiftly can lead to inadequate oversight of supply chains and insufficient testing of materials, resulting in the distribution of unsafe products. This situation underscores the importance of stringent operational protocols and robust management systems to maintain high standards.

Several solutions could address these issues:

  1. Stricter supplier vetting: E-commerce companies should implement rigorous vetting processes for suppliers, ensuring they meet high standards for product safety and ethical manufacturing practices.
  2. Enhanced quality control measures: Regular and comprehensive testing of products, especially those intended for children, should be mandatory. This includes using third-party laboratories to verify safety standards.
  3. Transparency and traceability: Companies should enhance transparency within their supply chains, allowing for better traceability of products from raw materials to finished goods. This can help identify and address potential issues early.
  4. Consumer education: Educating consumers about product safety and purchasing from reputable sources can also mitigate risks. Providing clear information about product origins and safety certifications can build consumer trust.
  5. Regulatory compliance: Adhering to international safety standards and cooperating with regulatory bodies to ensure compliance can prevent the distribution of harmful products. This includes keeping abreast of changes in regulations and updating practices accordingly.

Implementing these solutions can help e-commerce companies like Shein improve product quality, protect consumers, and enhance their reputations in the competitive online marketplace.
