You are currently viewing Green commerce: sustainable e-commerce practices

Today, GREEN IT or sustainable computing is establishing itself as a standard, particularly for e-commerce sites. The increase in online purchases raises many environmental questions and concerns. E-commerce platforms need to adopt sustainable practices. This includes eco-friendly packaging, sustainable supply chains, energy-efficient warehouses, promoting circular economy and reducing returns and waste.

Eco-friendly packaging

One of the most significant environmental impacts is the excessive use of packaging. Faced with the negative impact of traditional materials such as plastic and polystyrene, many companies are adopting eco-friendly alternatives. Biodegradable and recyclable materials such as paper and cardboard are increasingly used. Amazon is a meaningful example, as they introduced packaging forms which reduce the unnecessary use of plastic and makes recycling easier for consumers. Small businesses are also becoming increasingly creative, using recyclable materials and minimalist designs to reduce their environmental footprint.

One very crucial point to note is that, while manufacturers or distributors make up product packaging recyclable does not mean in any way those packaging forms are being recycled; there are many reasons for that; just to mention two of them : people do not necessarily sort products once used; another reason is that cities are not necessarily equipped to recycle anything beyond paper/carboard or plastic bottles.

Sustainable supply chains

Responsible e-commerce is not limited to packaging and delivery but also encompass the entire supply chain. Consumers are demanding more and more environmental and social responsibility from brands. As a result, companies are increasingly adopting responsible sourcing practices. This means using materials from sustainable sources, such as organic cotton or FSC-certified wood, just to name two examples. It also means ensuring fair labor practices and minimizing waste in the production process.

Energy-efficient Warehouse

Warehouses are notorious for high energy consumption, mainly due to lighting, heating and air conditioning. For a more sustainable future, consider solar panels, LED lighting and advanced insulation. These improvements can significantly reduce electricity consumption while maintaining optimal conditions for warehouse operations. Companies such as Walmart and Amazon are leading the way in implementing these green technologies in their fulfillment centers.

Reducing returns and waste

Product returns represent a major challenge for e-commerce, resulting in waste and additional carbon emissions linked to transport. To solve this problem, companies are innovating by using technology to minimize the number of returns. Today, AI starts being used to plan variants, colors, perfume of products alongside seasonality in function of the geographical area to manage the lowest return rate possible.

E-commerce sites are also adopting virtual fitting rooms and augmented reality (AR) tools allowing customers to virtually try and use products, reducing the number of returns due to sizing errors or color misfits. When it comes to returned items, many companies are developing recycling and reuse strategies rather than sending them to landfill. This approach not only reduces waste, but also offers companies an opportunity to recoup part of their margins.

Promoting a circular economy

Circular economy is a system that aims at promoting the continuous use of resources. In the context of e-commerce, this means designing business models and items that encourage reuse, repair and recycling. According to a recent study, 55% of consumers have purchased a sustainable product or service.  Some e-commerce platforms are embracing this concept, offering products that are designed to last over time and can be easily repaired. Others have gone so far as creating platforms for buying and selling second-hand products. By promoting a circular economy, e-commerce companies can reduce their environmental impact and therefore improving their own company or brand image.

Sustainable e-commerce practices are key to reducing the environmental impact of online shopping.
