The ecological buildings with positive energy

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark, but it is also the capital of green building. A United Nations building in the city has 1400 solar panels and an air conditioning system that uses seawater. Energy performance of this type of building, have nothing to do with what was there just 20 years.
In the European Union, the building sector is among the most energy intensive sectors. It represents 40% of total energy consumption, while exceeding two transport sectors and industry. Therefore, the needs to achieve energy savings in the building are a major economic and environmental issue. Houses based consumption, called passive, are already thousands in northern Europe, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden… and have already proven that technical solutions exist. This achieves a very low consumption in these buildings, approximately 50 KWh/m2 a year, or eight times less (450 KWh/m2) than a classic average building dating of 1970s. A positive energy building is still better, it is a building that produces more energy than it consumes for its operation. This is possible thanks to a local energy production with means of abstraction or productions like photo voltaic collectors, solar heat, wind turbines, heat popes buried in the ground …
The positive energy buildings are becoming more innovative and more numerous, though still too rare. It is mainly offices, a third of individual houses and the rest of the collective housing. (suite…)

Contactless technology, a true technological revolution

To pay with a credit card or a smartphone, will be possible in a few months in Europe with contactless technology. What are the consequences for our daily lives? What security problems will appear with these new cards? What are the benefits for consumers?
Launched in 2010 in France, a new means of payment is conquering consumers, contactless payment with a credit card or a smartphone. In 2013, approximately eight million contactless transactions were recorded in France, and this number is constantly growing.

So, what are the advantages and shortcomings of contactless payment? How does this technology work?   Is this method successful beyond our borders?
Today in some stores in Paris, it is possible to pay without contact. For a payment of less than 20 Euros, no need to type the code, transactions can be up to two times faster and it avoids having to go to the ATM because even very small amounts are accepted.
There is no minimum amount in this type of payment.A trader need not necessarily have the money or have a credit card, because everything is in his phone. (suite…)

The surprising properties of smart concrete

Concrete is everywhere around us, it goes into the construction of ¾ of our houses. In CERIB, the Centre for Studies and Research of the Concrete Industry, a hundred engineers and researchers working to improve its properties, but they are not the only innovation in the field.
In today’s inner cities, the concrete architecture represents pollution and gray, but the concrete inventions could change that. It could become bright, durable and acquire new properties. Transform the public impression through innovative concrete spaces, this is the goal of researchers from the University of Kassel in Germany: the benches can reflect light to see better at night, the tunnel could be light to improve safety and the quayside may be reflective to better guide passengers…
The initial project, which brought together researchers from the university, was to develop a concrete that reflected light. Thus is born the first building material both reflective and non-flammable, since the duo filled ideas. To test and put into practice, the researchers created an interdisciplinary laboratory at the University of Kassel. Their goal is the development of cheap high-tech materials; that is to say, give a new functionality to simple and familiar materials such as wood, paper, stone or concrete.
Concrete is composed of cement, water, sand and gravel. On mixing these four elements concrete is obtained. You can add a variety of ingredients to this basic recipe, such as dyes or so to make reflective glass beads concrete. These beads are used to reflect the light and spread them evenly over the surface; the team developed a special form. Researchers still need a formwork for pouring the concrete into it, because it is liquid at first. (suite…)

Jugaad innovation

The concept of “Jugaad innovation” is an Indian word which translates as “smartness” or “System D” and characterizes innovation in Indian. Ingenious, but inexpensive, a way of looking at progress, that in the context of the economic crisis, is seducing developing countries.
The Indian concept of frugal innovation has been theorized by French, Navi Radjou. born in Pont Tear (Dunkirk). According to him, Jugaad is an Indian word meaning the ingenious ability to improvise and find solutions in very difficult conditions.
Being resourceful with very little means, in India it is a philosophy that applies on the day to day to facilitate all areas of daily life: a padlock to lock his car, pulled by a steamroller tractor, a chopper which runs through a drill, a lift is a simple rope and an old scooter or a container that can carry 50 liters of water effortlessly. All these unusual and useful innovations are Jugaad.
Navi Radjou became the guru of frugal innovation. After his studies in Paris, he moved to the United States to meet the word Jugaad, because today this philosophy has conquered even the richest countries. Developed countries also have needs for sustainability, for example, because they are very greedy in energy consumption. Therefore, the need to “better me” is a universal need.
“Better with me,” this is the whole concept of frugal innovation. In France, an engineer (polytechnic) 39 years it was his credo. The latter died to tackle the problem of heat generated by computers; heat is lost when it could be used. Avoid waste, this is the Jugaad. (suite…)
