Agricultural data, what uses?
The digital revolution has profoundly changed uses, especially in the agricultural sector. Now, farmers have integrated new technological tools into their daily lives, such as drones, automated robots and sensors. These tools produce agricultural data, helping to improve practices in this sector.
Agricultural data is of all kinds. They can correspond to geographic data relating to plots or buildings, but also to data concerning agricultural practices (treatment of a disease) and IoT (weather station, water quality, quality of air…).
This raw data, taken together, constitute the “Big Data”. Generally, they don’t generate value when taken in isolation, but through analyses, results can be deduced, improving several aspects of the agricultural sector.
Use cases for agricultural data
Generally, agricultural data improve two categories of use: “services to the farmer” and the “valuation of marketing and commercial practices”.
“Services to the farmer” understand as solutions improving agricultural practices. The analyzes and decisions resulting from the data promote the use of precision farming techniques. These techniques allow to increase agricultural productivity while reducing resources (water, fertilizer, etc.) and the environmental impact.
The second use case concerns the “marketing valuation and commercial practices”. By considering consumer concerns, data drive marketing and sales practices allowing to create innovative solutions.
Now, consumers have high demands on several aspects of their food, in particular the traceability of food products. This indication allows to know the entire value chain of the food product, from production to sale, it also helps prevent disease, reduce waste and increase profits. By taking this data into account, a label (“Yuka”) using “blockchain” technology, to trace food products, was created in order to ensure consumer’s need.
Agricultural data constitute an opportunity to improve overall practices in the agricultural sector. They support the discovery of new, more innovative and environmentally friendly solutions.
