Amazon Web Services and NFL Team Up to Prevent Player Concussion
Face to the recrudescence of concussions, the National Football League (NFL) has decided to call on Amazon. This partnership aims to create a platform, dubbed “The Digital Athlete“, to improve the safety of professional players as well as predict injuries.
According to a study published in 2017 in the journal of the American Medical Association, out of 111 who had Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), 110 players died in the National Football League (NLF). A cerebral degeneration linked to repeated shocks on the head. In an attempt to stem this phenomenon, the NFL has used Amazon web Services (AWS).
A simulation platform
This partnership was publicly announced on December 5th, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada. This software platform dubbed “The Digital Athlete”, will be used to simulate game scenarios without endangering the real players. It will combine Amazon’s AI, machine learning and computer vision technologies with the vast amount of data held by the NLF. Indeed, the NLF has a lot of information about its players and counts thousands of match videos but does not have the expertise to exploit them.
This is where AWS comes in by using its tools. It’s about understanding where these injuries come from by analyzing what’s happening on the ground. Then the results should allow to review the ergonomics of the helmets. Manufacturers will be able to modify their manufacturing so that they better protect the heads of professional players.
Broadly applicable technology
- This type of predictive technology may be applicable to other sports in the future. One of the ambitions of “Sport Tech” is precisely to better understand injuries to reduce their number. This type of device makes it possible to study the training load, the constraints of the high level sport and their links with the injury. Analysts cut a lot of medical data to know exactly when an injury is looming.
