In the second quarter of 2017, the amount of Internet purchases increased by 11% to 19.5 billion euros, according to the federation of e-commerce enterprises.

“E-commerce continues to be democratized,” said Jamila Yahia-Messaoud, director of the Ad’hoc department of Médiamétrie, on the occasion of the presentation on Fevad (the professional federation of the sector) of online sales in France in the second quarter.
From April to June 2017, 36.9 million Internet users made an online purchase, more than 8 out of 10 Internet users and 964,000 more cyber-buyers than a year ago. Overall, this panalization of online shopping has resulted in an 11% year-on-year increase in Internet spending to € 19.5 billion.

More purchases at lower prices

On average, a buyer has made nearly 10 online purchases in the past three months, compared with 9 in the first quarter. This increase in the number of transactions is accompanied by a 3% drop in the average basket, to 68 euros. However, in total, cyber-buyers spend a larger part of their budget on their purchases on the Web, at 664 euros, or 100 euros more over two years.

Rise in purchases in fashion

At the same time as the Fevad, the French fashion institute (IFM) provided data on online fashion sales: turnover stands at just over EUR 5 billion on a market clothing totaling 28 billion euros.
However, the dynamism of online sales does not compensate for the erosion of in-store sales, notes the IFM.
“Young women are over-consuming fashion on the Internet,” the institute notes, pointing out that while women’s clothing purchases account for 49% of the market in value, this share reaches 55% on the Internet.

Rise in the power of mobile Internet

According to the ranking of the most frequented shopping sites established by Médiamétrie, Amazon is the lion’s share with an average of nearly 23 million unique visitors, followed by Cdiscount (15.47 million) and Voyages-sncf. com (12.6 million).
Next comes the FNAC, Vente-privée, Groupon, eBay, Booking.com and Carrefour. Among the most visited online travel sites, Airbnb takes third place behind Voyages-Sncf.com and Booking.com.
Another lesson from this quarterly study is the surge in mobile sales. The ICM index, which measures the evolution of sales on the mobile Internet (smartphones and tablets), rose by 37% in the second quarter of 2017.

The attraction of balances

The increase was particularly strong during the summer balances as orders for mobile terminals increased by 53% compared to the previous year. They accounted for 21% of textile-fashion specialist orders (+7 points in one year) and 35% of orders from other sectors (+8 points).
