Turkcell and Huawei: a strategic cooperation for the installation of 5G
Further in the evolution of new technologies in emerging countries, Turkey had to anticipate and in order to do so, set up compatible successful network equipments with new technologies. For this purpose, the Turkish government has been able to entrust this task to the rapidly expanding Chinese telephone operator, Huawei.
The promising beginning
Among the recent accomplishments made by the Turkish government in August 2015, the agreement between Turkcell (Turkish operator) and Huawei (Chinese telephone operator) is noteworthy. This element led to a strategic cooperation for the implementation of the 5G network.
The strategic project consisted in developing in Turkey, a new generation of wireless technology and in order to do so, a strategic plan was concluded with the Chinese group. More than a strategic plan, this agreement did not only bring both countries closer but it also made two big groups emerge as leaders in their own markets.
The main objective was to set up a strategic partnership in particular to look for and improve the 5G technology.
But then, where are the investments for the evolution of the 4G?
“Turkey should not “lose time” with 4G telecoms technology”, President Tayyip Erdogan said, calling for a move to 5G technology within two years and casting doubt over an on going tender process (during a ceremony in April 22nd, 2015 before the signature as the agreement of a strategic cooperation between Turkcell and Huawei in August, 2015).
However, Turkey’s communications technologies authority BTK (Bilgi Teknolojileri ve Iletisim Kurumu) asserted that an investment for the 4G was made all the same, with an offer of twenty frequency segments at a minimum value of around 2.3 billion euros.
Afterwards, Turkey’s communications ministers have said 4G services are planned to be offered to the consumers at the beginning of 2016.
A strong communication
After the rumors of political conflicts that came to the surface between China and Turkey concerning Ouïghours, an agreement was signed to make sure that both countries are always in perfect communication.
For the next coming years, Turkcell and Huawei are planning to make technological researches for the development of the 5G connexion and contribute to the evolution of the sector.
Afterwards, these two operators are aiming at the implementation of numerous workshops and regular meetings to analyse the needs of the Turkish market compared to the global market concerning the process of the 5G.
Therefore, two big groups are going to work hand in hand in the activities of research and development of 5G with common equipments. Their goal? Setting up a strong communication for a world that they will build together on the performance of 5G.
A common work concerning Research and development
According to the declaration by the Council president of Turkcell Ahmet Akça: ” as Turkcell groups, we made a commitment to shape and to operate an advanced technology of the 5G. With Huawei, we work in common to meet the needs and expectations of particular customers but also companies. Concerning R&D, our companies are also going to cooperate to reach the goals. We are all going to work in close collaboration with our partners in the field of the 5G “.
Afterwards, the vice-president of Huawei Ping Guo declared: “so much for Turkey, so much for innovative Turkish leader of the telephony sector Turkcell, this one is always creative of new ideas and solutions. As regards Huawei, we want to strengthen our cooperation with Turkcell in the future. The architecture of the 5G technology will be completely different from that of the 4G. Besides, the agreement signed by both groups in common R&D, is going to create a very big and important (invaluable) result at the same time for Turkcell and we strongly believe that it is going to supply answers to the needs for the standards and for the technologies of Turkey“.
A project spread out over two years
During a ceremony organized by the operator Türk Telekom (company of telecommunication) in April 22nd, 2015, the guest of honor, Mister Recep Tayyip Erdogan evoked the intentions of Turkey in the coming years. He expressed in particular that Turkey will be “connected” with 5G within the next two years.
Furthermore, the Turkish government didn’t base itself on the evolution of 4G in order to avoid public investments. It would rather try to directly establish the jump from 3G to 5G. “Can we do this?” “ We definitely can“, he said.
Finally, he said “we’re still discussing 4G, but I’m thinking, the world is talking about 5G. Therefore we don’t need to lose time with 4G. Let’s be patient…”
