Social Internet of Things (SIoT) is a novel term, and many people are not familiar with it. In fact, Social Networks and Internet of Things are two of the most promising paradigms in the near future. Aside from affording a connection to the Web, the real change will happen when the smart products will also leverage the collective intelligence of a community of people. It’s time to start thinking about the social life of smart objects.
According to L Atzori, A Iera, G Morabito, M Nitti , the Social Internet of Things (SIoT) is defined as Internet of Things where things are capable of establishing social relationships with other objects and autonomous interaction among humans and devices. Today, it is just the beginning of the era where physical objects connected to the Web can be controlled by your smartphone or your laptop. When things get smarter and smarter, the Internet of Things gets more and more social! The Social Internet of Things will be the main challenge for the next decade.
Advantages of Social Internet of Things (SIoT)
The adoption of the SIoT presents many advantages. Firstly, a level of trustworthiness can be established due to the interaction among things that are considered as friends. SIoT will allow objects to have their own social networks and to still to know the difference between people and objects. Secondly, the structure of the things’ social network can be shaped as required : it will effectively perform the discovery of devices and guarantee scalability as in human social networks.
In our opinion, there will be a difference thanks to social objects instead of smart objects. So, how the Social Internet of Things will change our lives?
Social Internet of Things can be applied into the realm of health care. We will be able to obtain reliably and quickly several expert health advices. Indeed, the health professionals will be well informed of our physical state by capturing our health data that we share with them on the internet of things. By using social medial tools, patients will be able to connect easily to the best doctors across the world.
Better response to our needs
As more objects and services become part of the digital ecosystem, people will generate a huge amount of data. Companies will be able to understand in unprecedented detail our attitudes and behaviors. For example, companies have the opportunity to understand how we interact with our physical environment and what we want genuinely. Finally, companies will able to design truly valuable experiences around their products and services to add value to our lives.
Actually, it is impossible to predict with any certainty what will happen when the internet of things will become social. In spite of this, we are convinced that the internet of things will make a deep impact on social media. If the Internet of Things promises to be a source of huge benefits to our lives in the near future; yet it could afford a source of difficulties for engineers of telecommunication networks and applications. That is why we strongly believe that a social approach to the Internet of Things will be needed as an appropriate new communication paradigm.
